Organizing & Aging In Place

09.21.2017 by Carrie Kauffman //

Home Organization for Aging Parents & Seniors

By Carrie Kauffman, Professional Organizer

An organized home makes life easier for everyone living there.  This is especially true for aging parents or in-laws who want to continue to live independently. Aging in place is a top priority for many seniors.  They enjoy their home.  They are comfortable there. They love it and want to remain there for as long as possible.

But, in many cases, the responsibilities of caring for themselves and their home become too much to handle.  Clutter can cause stress. Compound that with missed doctor’s appointments, medication mix-ups, falls and resulting injuries…Getting and staying organized is even more important as we get older.

By reducing clutter, maximizing safety and putting organized systems in place, seniors can stay in their homes safely…for a longer amount of time.

Best Practices for Organizing for Seniors

Prioritize safety & accessibility

The items they use most often should be easily accessible and, ideally, within arm’s reach.  Take into consideration physical limitations, including mobility and vision, when planning living spaces.

Prevention of stair falls is a #1 priority since one fall can “change it all,” and not for the better.  A stair lift is the most efficient way to prevent dangerous falls.  101 Mobility of Greater Philadelphia has proven to be a reliable and affordable local resource providing quality home mobility equipment like stair lifts, wheelchair ramps, vertical platforms and home elevators.  They offer sales, rentals and refurbished units and have the only buy back program in the area, so if a move is in the future, you don’t have to lose your whole investment.

Involve them in the process

Remember, this is their home.  Ask for their opinions.  Ask them before you toss something.  Ask them what would be easiest for them.  Ask them to be honest with you (and themselves) about their physical limitations and mobility concerns.  Ask them how they feel about everything!

Top Organizing Tips For Seniors

Less Is More

After decades of living in the same space, seniors accumulate a lot of stuff.  Go room by room and declutter to maximize space and accessibility– toss/donate anything that is no longer needed or used.  Ask your loved ones if they have any problems using the items they currently have. Too heavy, too hard to use, no longer in use?  Time to toss or replace with new items that are easy to use.

Once you eliminate the things they don’t need, you can start organizing each living space with their individual, and possibly changing, needs in mind.

Keep It Simple (Well Lit & Labeled)

Labeling shelves with large print can be invaluable when putting organizing systems in place.  Labeling cleaning supplies can ensure that the correct product is being used.  Don’t forget to throw away any expired food or cleaning supplies.

When arranging furniture, a simple, clutter-free floor plan is ideal.  Eliminate extra furniture that is taking up space or impeding walkways. Are there too many floor lamps with electrical cords all around? Position the lamps with cords out of the way while providing ample light.

Keeping a few canes around the house is also a good idea.  If a wheelchair or a walker is being used in the home, make sure walkways are clear and wide enough to accommodate the equipment.  101 Mobility can also help with home modification like door widening, grab bars and bathroom modifications.

Be Strategic With Your Upper & Lower Cabinets

If bending down is difficult for your parent or loved one, consider adding glide-out shelving to existing cabinets, or move items up to a higher cabinet that they can easily access, without having to bend down. Glide-outs under the sink are important as well. Adding this type of shelving can be helpful to stop unnecessary bending and stress on backs, knees and legs. I even do this in my own home for my husband and children.

ShelfGenie has been a trusted resource of mine for glide-out shelving in kitchen cabinets, pantries and bathroom vanities.  Thoughtful design, excellent warranties and customer service, and quality products earn them repeated awards in the industry and rave reviews from me and my clients.

Manage Medication

If your loved ones are taking multiple medications on a daily basis make sure that they are stored together, in one central location.  Consider storing all medications in a clear container, labeled for each parent/resident.  Separate into daily pill compartments to avoid forgetfulness.

In Case Of Emergency – Important Documents

Paper clutter can become unruly, no matter your age.  However, it is vitally important that seniors keep all important medical, financial and legal documents in one central location.  Caregivers should be aware of the location for easy access in case of emergency.  Start with either a clear file storage crate or box, with or without lid.  Organize medical, financial and legal information in order of importance – specialists, primary care physician, medications, power of attorney, living will, bank statements, insurance and investment information, etc… Make sure the labels are large enough for anyone to read.

These tips come from years of working with clients but also, my own personal experience.  I lost my father at a young age and I was in charge of handling his affairs. Losing a parent is impossibly hard.  Not being prepared can compound the emotion and stress of an already challenging time.  Take the time to organize your home and affairs now.  It will save you time and heartache down the road.

Building Community – Getting Organized on the Main Line

How It Started…

Building Community – Getting Organized on the Main Line

Organizing is my passion.

I am very lucky that I get to do what I LOVE each & everyday.

I love helping people in their homes and offices…getting my hands dirty…but in recent years, I’ve been getting more and more requests for organizing advice, recommendations, resources on social media.  Those notifications became more and more frequent as friends and clients would tag me in a post, most frequently on Main Line Parent Community, where someone was asking a question about how to organize this or that or they were looking for a Professional Organizer.

It became so hard to respond to each and every tag in a timely fashion.  Something needed to change!  People needed my help. So I did some research and saw there was no other specific organizing pages for our area, the Main Line…so I decided to start one myself…and so Getting Organized On The Main Line (GOML) was born.

Not everyone has the means to hire a professional organizer…or they don’t want a stranger in their house, going through their things…but that doesn’t mean that they should be deprived of the benefits of hiring one.

In my clients’ home & offices, I find that they need certain things to motivate them to get organized.

  • People need to have a cheerleader.
  • People need a support system.
  • People need to be inspired.

When I can’t be with every person, in their home or office…There’s a safe space, to find all of the motivation, support and advice you need…GOML.

Our members (7500 strong & counting) help and support each other…24/7.

Organizing isn’t a secret. It’s simple.

  • Before you start, set yourself up for success.
  • Start off small and work your way up and know…

GOML will be here when you need it.

From Summer to School

Back To School Organizing Do’s & Dont’s

OK, folks…it’s August.  Any day now, the mail will arrive with teacher assignments and the excitement (and anxiety) of the new school year will start to bubble up!

While the kids won’t go back to school for a few more weeks, we all know the planning for the FDOS starts much sooner, behind the scenes…The work done here will set you (and your kids) up for a successful transition from summer to school!  Check out my Do’s & Don’ts…they save me the first day headaches…every year!

1.) DO Roll Back…Bedtime

The relaxed bedtime routine during the summer can be a FDOS killer…but only if you let it.  One small adjustment, each day, in the week or two leading up to the start of school can ensure success. It starts with setting their bedtime back 15 minutes each night.  Continue until you roll back to desired school year bedtime. Now, when it’s time to get up at 6:30am, they are adjusted to the time change from day 1. Bodies and brains are ready to go, move, learn!

2.) DON’T Get Trapped In The Paper Chase

Don’t sit on those must complete school and medical forms. Save yourself the 11th hour scramble…If your kids require ongoing medical monitoring (think daily meds or allergy related epi-pens), contact your school nurse at least 3-4 weeks prior to the start of school. There will be forms that need to be filled out by your physician before the start of school.

3.) DON’T Over-Do The Back To School Clothes Shopping

Summer clothes rule on the first day of school.  Look back through your FDOS pics…most likely shorts, skirts, dresses, tanks and tees… If necessary, I only buy a few things for them and then buy clothes when they do need them, closer to October.  Give yourself a break and put Fall shopping on the back burner for now.

4.) DO Set Your Kids Up For Success – The Homework Station

Create a homework station.  This is where all homework will be done.  Quiet, calm, comfortable and consistent is what you want.  Next…the school supplies list. Pick up some extra supplies for your kids’ homework station…items you might not have around the house.  For my twins, I purchased extra protractors, rulers and a dictionary.  I knew that they would need them at home as well as school.  Bonus: it eliminates the, “I left my protractor at school” excuse. Set them up for homework success with a “homework caddy.” Stock it with pencils, glue sticks, crayons, rulers and anything else they may need to get their homework done.  I also make color coded file for each of them that stays at the homework station. When they come home, they put any important papers, that need to be reviewed, in their folder. Everything they need….is within reach.

5.) DO Prep Your Pantry

School makes kids hungry!  And they need good fuel to keep their bodies and minds moving.  Give them easy access to healthy snacks (for lunches and after school) by prepping your pantry. I prefer using clear bins so they can see what’s inside and they can grab & go. The clear bins make it easy to see what’s inside so I know when to restock. I can also see what they are eating and what they aren’t.

Now, while there are probably 500 more tips I could offer for BTS, these are my absolute musts to keep things running smoothly, minimize potential conflicts and get them to school on time!  Hope they help you, too!

6.) DON’T Get Caught Up In The Tasks

Take some time to enjoy the last days of summer leading into the first day of school.  Plan ahead and save time, everyday for good quality family time.  Remember that all of the emotions that you are feeling….the stress, excitement, anxiety, fear….well, your kids are feeling that too!  Make your home and the days leading up to school a safe, calm, comfortable space to quell the Back To School nerves.  Talk to your kids about how they’re feeling, spend quality time and enjoy each others company before the craziness begins!
